| Carbon Clock at Madison Square Garden |

Designed by scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and hanging outside Madison Square Garden, the giant counter shows that the amount of carbon dioxide in earth’s atmosphere is at 3.64 trillion metric tons, the highest level in 800,000 years.
Numbers spinning on the counter show that CO2 is being added to the atmosphere at the rate of 800 tons per second.
The clock takes into account all greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, and reports them in carbon dioxide equivalents. It skips the effects of natural cycles, such as the El Nino, and doesn’t factor in aerosols, which are difficult to measure and also exert a cooling effect.
This 70-foot, 13 character sign, sponsored by Deutsche Bank, was erected for a variety of reasons from sparking public debate on how to reduce emissions to helping various industries profit from a low-carbon economy.
The bank has also launched a Web site, Know The Number, a widget displaying the carbon figure that can be downloaded to desktops, and a Twitter feed.
